H. Roland Deterding, 82, of Bloomington, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Luther Oaks in Bloomington.
His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 31, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomington with Pastor Terry Strom officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday at Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Bloomington. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Roland was born on September 3, 1934 in Bluffs, Illinois, a son to Rev. John and Salome Schwagmeyer Deterding. He married Patricia Etter on June 3, 1956 in Ipava, Illinois.
Surviving is his wife, Patricia ‘Pat' Deterding of Bloomington; three daughters, Karen (Anthony) Cwynar of Naperville, Mary (John) Anderson of Charlottesville, VA and Beth (Steve) Small of Bloomington; grandchildren, Michael (Sascha) Anderson of Santa Fe, NM, Jennifer Anderson (Michael) Smith of Oakwood, OH and Corissa, Samantha, and Jessica Small, all of Bloomington; great grandchildren, Winifred and Georgette Anderson, both of Santa Fe, NM; sisters, Emily Winkelman of Virginia, IL and Betty (Duane) Beringer of Honolulu, HI and many nieces, nephews, friends and work colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lorna and Doris; and five brothers, Rev. John, Paul, George, James, and Walter.
Roland graduated from Western Illinois University in 1955 and received a Masters of Science in Education from Western Illinois University in 1961.
He taught high school mathematics and drivers education in Gilman, Stronghurst, and Glenview and also coached high school basketball.
Roland started working for State Farm Insurance in Bloomington in 1964 in data processing and retired as Director of Agency Planning in 1992.
He was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomington. Roland volunteered with Kiwanis after retirement.
His greatest joy was his family and especially loved to visit extended family. Roland enjoyed traveling, vacations on the beach, and playing golf.
The family would like to thank the staff at Luther Oaks for their compassionate care.
