Normal - Audrey Mae Graunke Gronert, 87, of Normal was called to rest at 3:10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at Sugar Creek Alzheimer's Care in Normal, Illinois.
Her funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday , June 21, 2018 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bloomington with Pastor Chad D. Lueck officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington.
Interment will be in Elm Lawn Memorial Park in Elmhurst, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church stained glass fund.
Audrey was born on October 23, 1930 in Elmhurst, Illinois, a daughter of George and Amelia Graunke. She married Donald Gronert on November 27, 1954 in Elmhurst, Illinois. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2017.
Surviving are her son, Mark (Kathy) Gronert of Fremont, CA; two daughters, Marcia (Doug) Workman of Saginaw, TX and Susan (Dave) Jahnke of Chicago; six grandchildren, Jacob Gronert, Luke Gronert, Amy Workman, Elizabeth (Steven) Workman Bowers, Christopher Workman and Alex Jahnke; one great grandchild, Claire Boggs and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and brothers, Vernon Graunke and Harold Graunke.
Audrey attended Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, IL and then taught kindergarten in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She met Don while teaching in Maryland. They married after he returned from the Korean Conflict and they moved to Bloomington/Normal in 1959. Audrey was a stay at home mom taking care of her children when they were young. Once they were older she filled in as a substitute and part time teacher at Trinity Lutheran School. Audrey later was employed as the office manager at TeleCable of Bloomington.
She was involved in many organizations at both Trinity Lutheran and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church including choir, handbells, LWML (Lutheran Womens Missionary League) and was a school board member of Trinity Lutheran School. She was a member of the Jayshe's Club of Bloomington/Normal. Audrey loved going on spur of the moment car trips with her husband.
Audrey was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be deeply missed.
