Barbara M. Horton, 86, of Normal, passed away at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, December 16, 2019 at her residence.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2019 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Jeffrey Stirniman, Monsignor Doug Hennessy, and Father Geoff Horton officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2019 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the church. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. after the visitation.
Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Normal. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, OSF Home Healthcare & Hospice, Holy Trinity Catholic Church Organ Fund, or to the donor's choice.
Barbara was born on October 20, 1933 in Fort Madison, Iowa, a daughter to Raymond and Kathryn Helling Wiebler. She married James J. Horton on January 21, 1956 in Fort Madison, Iowa.
She is survived by her husband, James Horton of Normal; children, Lynn Horton of Scottsdale, Arizona, Steve (Liz) Horton of Bloomington, Sue Horton of Normal, Mary (Ed) Carrow of Chicago, John (Katie) Horton of Bloomington, and Jim (Lara) Horton of Bloomington; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one on the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Anne, infant twin sons, brother, James Wiebler, and sisters, Dolores Olson and Joan Boddeker.
Barbara knew no strangers and brought sunshine wherever she went throughout her life. She was the youngest of four children and cherished her times with her sisters and brother. Barbara grew up in Ft. Madison, Iowa and met the love of her life, Jim Horton, across the river in Illinois in 1951. They married in 1956, starting a life together of almost 64 years which would bring happiness to so many.
She raised her six children to love and care for one another and others, and to enjoy life to its fullest. They have many stories of the smiles and tears shared over the years. Barbara was a proud grandmother to twelve. She connected with each, singing "A Bushel and a Peck" to them as toddlers, celebrating their school achievements as teens and sharing good times with them as adults. She had that same instant bond with her six great grandchildren. To Barbara's many nieces and nephews she was much more than Aunt Barbie, she was someone who genuinely cared for them and always made them feel special. She was a second mom to her childrens' friends and neighborhood kids, who were always welcome in her home and at the dinner table.
She loved music and everything about it - volunteering her time to the Holy Trinity choir for over 30 years. She could often be heard whistling her favorite tunes and singing to her grandchildren. As much as she enjoyed singing, she loved dancing too, and was an avid square dancer in her younger days. She shared her faith, cared for the less fortunate and always gave of her time, volunteering for St Vincent DePaul, St Joseph Hospital, Holy Trinity Church and driving for HELP. She loved vacations with her family and over the years they visited all 50 states.
She was especially known for always wanting to take detours to see long lost friends, relatives and others who just needed a friend. One of the trips they took most often was to Chicago to watch the Cubs play, including over 20 often freezing Opening Days, with Ken and Carol Imlah. Barbara enjoyed playing bridge for over 60 years but it was the lasting friendships she formed that meant the most to her. Barbara was always the first one to care for others and during her illness, her husband and children were honored to care for her. Barbara passed from this life as they surrounded her, sharing tears, hugs, songs and smiles. She looked forward to being reunited with her dear siblings, parents, and lost children and loved ones.
She will always be the sun and the moon to her family, and the love of her husband's life.
