Carol Lynn Grunewald, 72, of Gold Canyon, AZ, formerly of Bloomington passed away at 1:47 p.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, AZ.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomington with Pastor Thomas Wirsing officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday at Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington.
Interment will be at Blooming Grove Cemetery in Bloomington. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to The ALS Association.
Carol was born on October 31, 1946 in Bloomington, a daughter of Paul H. and Norma June Knuckels Giese. She married Robert ‘Bob' Grunewald on May 9, 1981 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomington.
She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Bob of Gold Canyon, AZ; children, W. Paul (Kimberly) Sloan of Edwardsville, Dean (Amy) Grunewald of Jacksonville, FL, and Jennifer (Greg) Alderman of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Lauren Sloan of Edwardsville, Alex (Amy) Sloan of Worden, Claire Grunewald, Dylan Grunewald, Harrison Grunewald, Carli Alderman, and Ellie Alderman all of Jacksonville, FL; great grandchildren, Jackson Sloan of Edwardsville, Payton Sloan of Worden. Carol is also survived by two sisters, Susan Conlon of Bloomington and Laurie (Michael) Hockenberry of Lakeway, TX, and a special nephew, Brett Hockenberry of Dallas, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Carol was employed as an administrative assistant at the Illinois Farm Bureau in Bloomington for 25 years, retiring in 2004. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomington until she and Bob relocated to Arizona in 2004. Carol was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Gold Canyon, AZ, where she was a member of the prayer shawl knitting group. She was also a member of the Gold Canyon Lions Club. While volunteering with the club she directed the vision pre-screen on nine thousand elementary school children over a 6 year period. The Gold Canyon Lions Club awarded Carol the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for her contribution to the club and community.
Carol and Bob enjoyed traveling together especially to the Caribbean, Europe, New Zealand, Australia and especially her favorite Maui and Oahu Hawaii. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing the piano. She was a fourteen year colon cancer and six year breast cancer survivor Carol was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan and will be remembered for the fact that her greatest joy came from spending time with family and friends.
Carol was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be greatly missed.
