Donald Winn

April 5, 1937 — February 12, 2019

Donald Winn

Don Winn loved the scenic route. He loved running, BLTs, summer sweet corn, homemade pie, fishing, and Cardinal baseball. He loved gardening and home-grown green beans and snowball fights and singing off-key. He had a signature whistle his kids knew by heart. He could recite Casey at the Bat and Ozymandias from memory and did so loudly and often. He was born April 5, 1937, son to Colman and Kiula Ingold Winn and died, age 81, February 12, 2019 in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Services will be held at College Park Christian Church in Normal, Friday, February 15, with visitation at 10:00 and funeral at 11:00. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. following services at the church in Funks Grove Cemetery in McLean, a site Don chose for its natural beauty and proximity to maple sirup. Memorials may be directed to Illinois Wesleyan University. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.

Don is survived by his wife, Annajean Ballinger Winn, a sister, Elsie Winn Brown; former wife, Gloria Nave Winn; two daughters, Laura (Kevin) McCracken and Amy (Jay) Eagle; a son, Kirby (Jenny) Winn; and many stepchildren and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Byron Winn, his sister Mary Winn Exon, and a granddaughter, Janna LeeAnn Mershon.

Don earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Illinois Wesleyan University, Illinois State University, and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He worked as a teacher, coach, truck driver, and security guard. He was a lifelong runner who captained IWU's first cross-country team in 1958 and ran the Boston marathon multiple times, first in 1960. Now he will run and not grow weary.
