Eleanor was born October 29, 1932, in Manson, IA, the daughter of Ben and Mae (Calmer) Erie. She graduated from Manson High School in 1950 where she lettered in varsity basketball and participated in chorus.
Remembering Eleanor is easy as she was a courageous, caring, devoted mother who will be in our hearts forever and dearly missed. She began her life as the Calhoun County Baby of the Year, loved living in Iowa, especially Des Moines, debating, politics, reading, playing the piano, bowling, daily walks, and traveling throughout the U.S. and to Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. Eleanor was a life-long blood donor, accomplished bookkeeper, and organized the inaugural Carroll County League of Women Voters where she was elected their first President in 1962.
She was an active member of the Carroll United Methodist Church, participated in voter registration drives, and was a frequent volunteer for organizations in Des Moines and at the Iowa State Capital. Most of all, she loved her children and dedicated her life to providing, inspiring, and comforting her family despite the hardships of being a single parent.
She is survived by three sons, Craig (Julia) Zimmerman, of Marietta, GA; Kirk Zimmerman of Bloomington, IL; Tom Zimmerman of Madrid, IA; one daughter, Sherry Miller of Blue Springs, MO; two sisters, Kay (Serge) Boudreau of Lincoln, NE; Lynne (Gary Schafer) Kotrous, of Columbus, NE; and six grandchildren, Cassius, Cody, Robert Jr., David, Rachel, and Heidi.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sharon Knights; her daughter, Laurie Zimmerman; and her son, Douglas Zimmerman.
