James E. ‘Ben' Crites, 79, of Bloomington, passed away at 10:59 a.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington.
His funeral service will be at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at God's Decision Outreach Ministry in Normal with Pastor Rochelle Patterson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. A repast at the church will follow services.
Memorials may be directed to the family. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.
Ben was born on February 18, 1939 in Patton, Missouri, a son to James H. And Willie R. Davis Crites. He married Sharon Harris in 1970 in Bloomington.
Surviving is his loving wife of 48 years, Sharon Harris of Bloomington; stepson, Derek Hopkins of Atlanta, GA, chosen son, Deon Crites of Springfield; siblings, Charles E. Crites of Arizona, Bernice McCleton of Chicago, Geraldine (Prentiss) Crites-Royston of Chicago, Joyce E. Allen of Chicago, Atta Clark of Decatur and Julia Gibson of Joliet; two stepbrothers; may loving cousins, nieces and nephews; special cousin, like a brother, Leon Fletcher and a God sent friend, Claude Prather and two God sent granddaughters, Dena Morton and LaRhonda Ellis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond Crites and William Crites; sister, Daisy Crites Huff and brother in-law, Pastor L.A. McClinton.
Ben was employed with GM & O Railroad and later, Rowe Construction for over 40 years, as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1999.
He loved the Lord and was a member of God's Decision Outreach Ministry for five years. He also attended Hour of Deliverance C.O.G.I.C. and New Hope Baptist Church, both in Bloomington.
Ben enjoyed fishing and the company of people, he was a people person and also enjoyed playing the guitar.
