John Atteberry

John B. Atteberry, 48, of Bloomington, passed away at 5:17 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

His funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at St. Patrick’s Church of Merna in Bloomington. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the church.

Interment will be in Hopewell Cemetery in Downs. Memorials may be made to the family, as they have requested a “pay it forward” in John’s memory. A celebration of life will follow the burial at GE/Union Park 150 General electric Road in Bloomington.

John was born January 21, 1973 in Arlington Heights, Illinois to Mike and Bette Atteberry. He married Tracy Weiland on August 19, 2000 in Bloomington Illinois and had two children Marissa (21) and Nicholas (20).

John attended Griffin/ Sacred Heart in Springfield, Illinois and graduated in 1991. John then furthered his education at the University of St. Francis, receiving a degree in psychology. From there, John worked at the Bloomington police department as a patrol officer and then a detective. Due to his lengthy battle with cancer, John turned in his badge and retired June 6, 2018.

In his free time John loved to travel with his family and he was very active in both his children's lives, from softball with Marissa to boy scouts with Nicholas.

Surviving are his wife and children, parents Mike and Bette, sister Tracy (Gary) Northrip, and brothers and sisters of the police department.
