Virginia Guthrie, 103, longtime resident of Urbana, Illinois, died Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Martin Health Center of Westminster Village, Bloomington.
Services will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1203 W Green St, Urbana, Illinois, at 11am, June 18, 2019. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Virginia was born March 21, 1915 in West Point, Illinois, the daughter of Ada McLean Guthrie and George Calvin Guthrie.
Miss Guthrie was Emeritus Associate Professor of Family and Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
Virginia graduated from Carthage High School in 1933. After two years at Carthage College, she spent nine years teaching in rural schools in Hancock County. In 1946 she received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois, then served as Moultrie County Home Advisor from 1946 to 1950.
Upon completion of her Master's Degree in Home Management at U. of I., she taught at Michigan State University, East Lansing, from 1951 to 1954. In 1954 she returned to the University of Illinois where she taught until her retirement in 1980.
In early retirement, she volunteered at the Carle Hospital gift shop and at Wesley United Methodist Church in Urbana where she was a member for over 60 years, enjoyed attending concerts and performances at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, and traveled throughout the United
States. In later retirement, she lived at Glenwood Assisted Living in Mahomet, and more recently Westminster Village in Bloomington, Illinois. She maintained her sense of humor and ability to relate to her caregivers right up until her final days.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister, Evelyn Guthrie Gardner. She is survived by her nieces, Virginia Gardner Riggins of Normal and Margaret Gardner of Mundelein, Illinois and by her great nieces, Christine Riggins Buckstead and Susan (Steffan Mehl) Riggins of Chico, California, and great-grandnephew and niece, Sebastian and Brigitte Mehl.
The family wishes to thank the staff of OSF Hospice and Martin Health Center at Westminster Village for the excellent care they gave Virginia.
A memorial service will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church, Urbana, in the summer.
