Normal - Marilyn J. Hammer, 88 of Normal, passed away at 6:02 a.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Villas of Holly Brook in Bloomington.
Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 13, 2017 at St. Luke Union Church in Bloomington with Rev. Dr. Andy Gifford officiating. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. prior to services at the church. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.
Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Farmer City. Memorials may be made to St. Luke Union Church or Community Cancer Center of Normal or to the Donor's Choice.
Marilyn was born on March 18, 1929 at Brokaw Hospital in Normal, a daughter to Lyle C. and Laverne Loman Morgan. She married Evan Jay Hammer on July 28, 1954 in Farmer City, Illinois. He preceded her in death on August 5, 2015.
Also surviving are her sons, Craig Dawson (Becky), La Plata, MO, Barry (Teri) Hammer, Downs and Kevin (Donna) Hammer, Ellsworth; sister, Phyllis Hammer, Denver, CO; one aunt, Dorothy Morgan, Tampa, FL; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, uncle, Berle C. "Barney" Morgan, and one son, Mark Hammer.
Marilyn was a wonderful grandmother to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a homemaker and worked in her family's businesses; Blossom Shop and Card Rack, in Farmer City. Later, she and Jay owned an antique store named "Country Sampler" in both Mahomet and later in Downs, where they also helped operate "Hammer's Market" along with Barry and their sons and family.
She was a member of St. Luke Union Church in Bloomington.
Marilyn will long be remembered by her family as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who taught her children and grandchildren to cook, appreciate birds and flowers, and enjoy the love and comfort of family.
The Hammer family is extremely thankful for the loving care shown to Marilyn by Vitas Hospice Care and Villas of Holly Brook in her final days and weeks.
