His memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomington with Pastor Thomas Wirsing officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment will be at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Bloomington.
Melvin was born September 18, 1932 in Beardstown. He married Dolores Barton on June 30, 1955 in Jacksonville. She preceded him in death on August 15, 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Earl Melvin and Orra Belle Staley.
Surviving are two sons, John Staley and Mark (Vicki) Staley both of Bloomington; two daughters, Betty Staley of Tuscon, Arizona and Sandy (Richard) Nordine of Bloomington; 10 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister, May Belle, of Santa Rosa, California.
Melvin grew up on the family farm in Beardstown, and worked primarily as a farm hand until moving to Bloomington in 1967. It was during his time on the farm that he acquired the ability to "fix anything with nothing." After moving to Bloomington and working a couple of years at the Eureka-Williams Company, he moved to the construction industry, via Laborer's Union Local 362 of Bloomington. A couple of years later, he joined the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 649 of Peoria, driving and maintaining heavy equipment. It was as an Operating Engineer that he spent the bulk of his working career, in road construction. The two companies that he predominately worked with were Eaton Asphalt of Bloomington and National Asphalt of Orland Park, retiring in 1997. His road work allowed him to experience and improve many states, including Texas, Georgia, Alabama, and Virginia.
Melvin lived a good, long life. He worked some long, hard hours to provide a good life for his family, and passed along his solid work ethic to his children. When not at work, he was often working in Staley's Garage, repairing just about anything that was put before him, especially things with wheels. He was able to pass down a great deal of his technical and engineering knowledge to his children and grandchildren. He especially loved automobiles, but was surprisingly weaned from NASCAR to Saint Louis Cardinals baseball as his entertainment of choice in his later years. He enjoyed traveling and took many road trips with his wife and family. He lived a good, honest life and will be sadly missed by those who loved him.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.
