Bloomington - Paul E. Nelson, 88, of Bloomington, passed away at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, June 24, 2016 at Heritage Manor in Minonk.
His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at St. Luke Union Church in Bloomington with Rev. Dr. Andy Gifford officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Park Hill Cemetery in Bloomington. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Central Illinois.
Paul was born on January 19, 1928 in Marion, Illinois, a son to Thomas and Evelyn Ring Nelson. He married Patricia Moore on June 14, 1947 in Marion, Illinois. She preceded him in death on August 15, 2009. He married Betty J. Kurth on July 9, 1971 in Bloomington. She preceded him in death on August 30, 2015.
Surviving are his two daughters, Debbie (Bob) Haugens of Mattoon and Sandy (Bob) Kelley of Bloomington; a son, Darrell (Christie) Nelson of Lacon; a sister in law, Sandy Mitchell of AZ; 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 2 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Paul was employed as a safety director at GTE in Bloomington for over 25 years and as a line supervisor at Eureka Williams in Bloomington, retiring after 25 years. He was a bar manager at the VFW for over 35 years.
He was a member of St. Luke Union Church in Bloomington; Bloomington Masonic Lodge #43; Bloomington Moose Lodge #745 and Bloomington Elks Lodge #281.
Paul enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. Paul loved spending time with his family and his dog, Buddy.
He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
