Bloomington - Romeyn M. Oyer, 89, of Bloomington, passed away at 6:59 a.m. on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Martin Heath Center in Bloomington.
Her memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Mennonite Church of Normal with Pastor Tim Schrag officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:30 a.m. prior to her service at the church on Saturday. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.
A private interment will be at Waldo Cemetery in Livingston County. Memorials in Romeyn's name may be made to Mennonite College of Nursing at ISU, the Romeyn Oyer Scholarship Fund or Martin Health Center.
Romeyn was born on March 27, 1928 in Chenoa Township McLean County, a daughter to Clarence C. and Alma (Egle) Oyer.
Surviving is one daughter, Joanna (Doug Valverde) Oyer of Normal; three grandsons, Nathan, Seth and Adam Valverde, all of Normal; one brother, Clarence E. Oyer of Heyworth; one sister, Joyce (Robert) Frey of Archbold, Ohio; two sisters in-law, Pat Oyer of Pontiac and Jean Oyer of Goshen, Indiana and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Richard, Bernard and LaVerne Oyer; one niece, Christina Oyer; two sisters in-law, Marilyn and Jeanne Oyer and an infant brother, Sonny.
Romeyn was a graduate of Mennonite Hospital School of Nursing and received her B.S. in Nursing from Bluffton College in Bluffton, Ohio. She practiced nursing for 60 years, including 47 years at Mennonite Hospital/BroMenn Medical Center. She was Director of Nursing at Livingston County Tuberculosis Sanatorium for a short time while also a patient. She filled positions at Mennonite Hospital, as an instructor in the school, head nurse, supervisor, and developed the home care program. She completed her nursing career as a staff nurse at BroMenn, retiring in 2001. Romeyn felt nursing fulfilled her calling for service to her God. Even after finishing her professional career, she helped care for others.
She was a member of Meadows Mennonite Church and attended Mennonite Church of Normal. She served on the board of various organizations throughout the years. She appreciated the love of family and friends, including Phyllis, Delite, and Velma, who shared their friendship and support. Grandma O. was quite proud of her three grandsons and loved them very much.
The family would like to thank the staff of Martin Health Center and Advocate Hospice for their care and support.
