Shirley Harness

Bloomington - Shirley Jean Harness, 85, of Bloomington, joined her heavenly family at 5:02 p.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.

Shirley was born on January 1, 1931 in Somerset, Kentucky, a daughter of Edward and Mae Catherine Kidd Mills. She married "Wild Bill" Harness on March 31, 1956. He preceded her in death on February 11, 2004. I believe he came to pick her up himself on an Indian or a Harley; they both sound the same so I can't be sure. I know he was there right on time, as always.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Anna Jean Blazek (Joe) Weldon; her beloved grandson, Samuel Jacob Lawrence (Haley) Clinton; granddaughters, Samantha Anne Murphy of Kennesaw, GA , Lola Lorraine Lawrence of Clinton and Danielle Ray.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Anna Lois and her first beloved grandson, Jason James-William Murphy.
Shirley was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of the Eastern Star Bloomington Chapter 50.

She was a talented seamstress who enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting and embroidery. She especially enjoyed finishing other people's projects when they tossed them aside. She worked with the Fibers of Love group making quilts and warm things for people that needed them. She read her "chapters" every day from any book she could get her hands on.

She was a kind, patient, talented woman with a great sense of humor. She found humor in everything and tried passing that on to everyone that spent time with her. She will be greatly missed and thought of often by those that loved her, her many sewing sisters at Fibers of Love, and by everyone that was lucky enough to have met her.

In our final conversation she asked that I do not have any funeral services for her. She asked that I include this final note to her "ad in the Pantagraph."

As a memorial to Shirley, hug your loved ones every single time you see them and tell them you love them every time you speak to them, try to do this as often as you can. Listen and learn something from every person you cross paths with, you can never learn enough, and finally take a friend to lunch for her. Tell them it's on Shirley and Bill.

We would like to wish many thanks to the staff of Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal and Heartland Healthcare Center in Normal.
