Virginia E. Helmke, 89, of Bloomington passed away at 4:25 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at her residence.
A Memorial Service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 27, 2018 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Bloomington with Pastor Keith Ferguson officiating. Visitation will be from 2-3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. An additional memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Emanuel Lutheran Church in New Haven, IN with Pastor David Stecker officiating. Inurnment will be at Scipio Cemetery in Harlan, IN. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to Wesley United Methodist Church or Emanuel Lutheran Church in New Haven, IN.
Virginia was born on November 12, 1928 in Nappanee, IN, a daughter to Oscar and Zae Lehman Haney. She married Maynard Dietich in 1947 in Bremen, Indiana. He preceded her in death in 1963. Later she married Hubert Helmke in 1977 in Woodburn, Indiana. He preceded her in death in 2006.
Surviving are her children, Ken Dietrich of Van Buren, IN, Carol (Scott) Lowry of Bloomington, Hugh (Imelda) Dietrich of Fredericksburg, VA, Hank Helmke of Angola, IN, Frank (Becky) Helmke of Woodburn, IN, Lynda Moore of Fort Wayne, IN, Cindy Moore of New Haven, IN, and Tim (Carla) Helmke of Grabill, IN; eighteen grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; sister, Marcia (Larry) Warne of Rockford, Louise Haney of Nappanee, IN; brother, Joe (Yvonne) Haney of Warren, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Maynard and Hubert; children, Donald K, Yvonne and Merle; and stepdaughter, Brenda Helmke.
Virginia worked as a bookkeeper at Breman State Bank and Warsaw Airport for many years and later worked as a secretary at Tepe's Dept. Store in Fort Wayne, IN until she retired.
She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Bloomington and Emanuel Lutheran Church in New Haven, IN
Virginia enjoyed music and playing the piano and organ as well as making bookmarks that she donated. Virginia also enjoyed reading books, knitting, traveling, genealogy and gardening.
She loved organizing family events such as the yearly ‘Birthday Bash'.
Virginia met Jesus. The family is incredibly sad but also happy for her. She showed her family how to work hard for the things they wanted. She was an incredible influence.
Virginia was a lovely and kind person. She was also known for being spunky. She will be greatly missed.
